What’s it like turning a trick at a luxury hotel in midtown Manhattan?
How are hay bales made on a small family farm? Why isn’t there a porn stars’ union? Have you ever been busted for drugs in Oklahoma? How do you make a Negroni cocktail? What is the technical name for candy corn? And how much will a tin of SPAM set you back when you’re visiting the Caribbean?
And what could these things possibly have in common?
They’re just some of the subjects covered by Tom Judson in this collection of essays. Fans of Gus Mattox (Tom’s stage persona while working in gay porn) were the first to encounter the surprisingly tender tone of Tom’s writing through posts on his blog, “Gus’s Soapbox.” Soon he began writing under his own name for magazines and newspapers around the globe, bringing the unique perspective and insight of someone who has seen life up close from perspectives most of us can only imagine.
This volume contains the essays most frequently requested by his readers.

"What a pleasure to have Tom Judson's delightfully insightful, funny and wise book of essays at one's fingertips. He was the Gypsy Rose Lee of Porn, but now he's ‘Tom Judson, Author’ and just as delicious."
--Charles Busch, author of Vampire Lesbians of Sodom

Each essay has a quality, that of Tom in wonderland though he's the one wondering. Think about Christopher Robin gone, slightly, criminal but atones for it by getting into and out of por. Tom, I feel I know him well enough to be on terms of intimacy, is one of those great guys that you always wish you knew but, somehow, don't. To say his essays are candid is understatement, what he doesn't bother to tell isn't worth knowing. All that said, this is a collection of a thoughtful person who's had an interesting life, knows it but has found a way to tell it that's both amusing, hell, it's hysterical, without being self deprecating. This is Tom Sawyer who got conned into painting his own fence but recognizes the con and is amused by it.Perhaps this isn't for everyone, check your level of prudery before opening, but for those who like their raunch with humour and humanity, then this is for you.

Laid Bare Essays and Observations edition by Tom Judson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
He writes well! It is alternately very funny, very sweet, sexy, and moving, and sometimes, it's all of those things at once. I read parts to my sister when she asked what I was laughing at, and she enjoyed them too.
A collection of Tom Judson/Gus Mattox's writings that are sure to peak your interest. From poignantly emotional to laugh out loud funny, Tom can tell a story as well as he can..... well..... you'll have to see the movies for yourself. Everyone who's anyone is reading Tom's book of life experiences and observations. Don't miss this one!
I first purchased Laid Bare on my , then decided to purchase the paperback to have Tom sign this summer when he visits Richmond.
The book is a great collection of short essays written about high and low spots in Tom's life, giving the reader a very personal view on his life, loves and view of events.
You can read one or two of the chapters, then set the book down for a bit. When you pick it up again another layer is exposed in Tom's life.
Loved it! This isn't a memoir, it's a collection of essays [mostly previously published, I believe], and while all are interesting and charmingly delivered, some are downright gems that will leave you in stitches, in tears, or both.
BUT I really wish Mr. Judson would give us that memoir, take us through his amazing life in a little more detail, show us a little more of the man that lives inside his remarkable body... If he gets around to writing it, I'll buy the first copy.
I sure liked Tom Judson's book, Laid Bare. It was my "bus book" this past week and it was a great companion on the daily commute. I heard of the book though a reading of Huckleberry Friends Tom recorded. I was trying to choose a favorite of his essays which turned out rather hard to do as I liked all of them. I re-read a number and from that list, (Panhandle Manhandle , Shoplifting Fire, Him and His Shadow) I choose Rigatoni with Sausage and Fennel. I laughed out loud over that one. Thanks for the great read.
I bought this book because my husband and I had the privilege of seeing Tom Judson perform last year in Fort Lauderdale. When I learned that he had written a book, I thought it might be worth reading. It certainly was. “Laid Bare” is a well-written collection of anecdotes, short stories and personal remembrances. Tom Judson shares his unique perspective on his life, including his experiences as a Broadway actor, in gay porn under the pseudonym Gus Mattox, and as an extremely talented musician. Considering the diversity of topics Judson covers, this book will not only hold the attention of gay men, but anyone who appreciates hearing someone else’s take on life. I thoroughly enjoyed each chapter and, based on reading this book, I look forward to his next book.
I found out about Tom through a friend who happens to be a fan of his adult movie works and was surprised to see he had written a book detailing his life pursuits and stories of people and experiences that happened along the way. The first night I picked up the edition I couldn't put it down. I found myself reading about his cross country travels until 3 in the morning.
It's an earnest collection of stories from a man who has lived a life of many chapters, both heartbreaking and hilariously irreverent, told with an enthusiasm that will have you seeking out Tom's blog and articles on HuffPo just to see what he's up to now.
It also shows you that though adult films may be a guilty pleasure we don't often speak of openly, there are real people behind the characters we enjoy. Definitely pick up this title if you're looking to peer into the life of an adult film star, broadway actor and gay man who has experienced the best and worst of the last few decades of American culture.
